Tara wasn’t sure how long she’d been in her office reading through papers – time just seemed to pass differently when she was cooped up alone working, and it wasn’t uncommon for her to get lost in there for hours without realizing. She must have been at her desk for a while though, because when Phelps came bursting through the door, the resident who’d been asleep had gone back to work.

He came in without knocking, looking unusually flustered, and Tara noticed he had a white lab coat in his hand. It wasn’t his own coat, because he was wearing one.

“Is that a gift for me?” She asked, putting down the patient file she’d been reading.

“Have you seen Ellis?” He asked, looking around the tiny office, as if somehow Gabby had managed to squeeze herself in underneath Tara’s desk, or into the locker on the back wall.

“Last time I saw her she was dealing with that car crash kid, but she hasn’t been in here. Why, what’s up?”

Phelps swallowed nervously, glancing back out into the hallway for a moment before coming into Tara’s office properly. “The kid died.”

“The kid what?”

“He died in the OR about half an hour ago. I was in the doctor’s lounge talking to Martinez. You know, the guy from surgery I play basketball with? Well, he was telling me that they’d just had a kid die on the table, and I think Gabby heard…” He trailed off, looking down at the coat. “She just got up and walked out of the office, and left this behind.”

Tara stared up at him in shock for a few moments, trying to process everything he’d just told her. How was it possible for a young, mostly healthy nineteen-year-old kid to die on the operating table, from something as simple as a broken leg?

“How did he die?” She asked quietly.

“They aren’t sure. Martinez said they were thinking a reaction to the anesthesia because it was before they’d even really gotten started on the surgery, but he doesn’t know much about it. All he knows is that it kind of took all the doctors by surprise. And now I can’t find Gabby anywhere, and no one has seen her.”

“Shit.” Tara hissed. Trevor was by no means the first patient Gabby had lost since she’d started working at City General’s, but she knew from firsthand experience that it was always harder to deal with a patient death if you’d spent even just a little time getting to know them. It was always worse when they were young.

“I’ve looked all over, and I can’t find her. I even went into the ladies room and got yelled at by one of the cleaners, but it’s like she just walked out of the hospital.”

“You went into the ladies' room before coming to check my office?” Tara asked, before realizing she was focusing on entirely the wrong issue. “Actually, don’t answer that. Just get back to the ER.”

“What about you?” He asked, following Tara out of her office.
